Calculate Square Feet Guide
Use this guide to understand square footage formulas, flooring and wall estimates, roofing squares, volume from area and depth, and price per square foot comparisons.
What This Calculator Does
This square footage calculator helps users calculate square feet for a room, home, floor plan, wall, roof, yard, property section, or building area. It also connects that area to real planning questions such as flooring boxes, tile, carpet, laminate, siding, roofing squares, mulch, topsoil, concrete volume, and price per square foot.
For square footage of my house or property-style searches, the multi-section mode lets you add measured rooms, floors, basements, garages, or yard sections and total them. The result is a measured estimate, not an official appraiser or assessor figure.
Square Footage Formula
The most common way to calculate square feet is to multiply length by width after converting both measurements to feet.
Square feet = length in feet x width in feet Irregular spaces are usually easiest to estimate by dividing them into rectangles, triangles, circles, or trapezoids, then adding the separate areas together.
How to Calculate Square Footage for Flooring, Tile, and Carpet
Flooring, tile, laminate, wood flooring, and carpet estimates usually start with the base area. Then you add a waste factor for cuts, pattern layout, stairs, damaged pieces, and future repairs. The calculator can divide that adjusted area by coverage per box, carton, roll, or package.
Flooring example
264 sq ft 12 boxes, before labor or trim. How to Calculate Wall, Siding, and Roofing Area
A wall square footage calculator multiplies wall length by wall height, then optionally subtracts windows, doors, and other openings. Siding estimates may subtract openings or keep them in the area for overage, depending on the workflow.
To convert square feet to roofing squares, divide roof area by 100. For example, 1,800 square feet equals 18 roofing squares before waste, or 19.8 squares with 10% waste.
How to Convert Square Feet to Cubic Yards or Cubic Meters
Mulch, topsoil, and concrete-style estimates need depth, not just area. Convert depth to feet, multiply by square footage, then convert the result into cubic yards or cubic meters.
Cubic feet = square feet x depth in feet; cubic yards = cubic feet / 27 Example: 500 square feet at 3 inches deep is 4.63 cu yd. This is the kind of conversion used for square feet to cubic yards mulch and topsoil calculator square feet searches.
Price per Square Foot Explained
Price per square foot is total price divided by square feet. Rent per square foot uses the same idea with monthly rent, and annualized rent multiplies monthly rent by 12 before dividing by area.
A manual comparable average is useful when you want a price per sq ft in my area style estimate but do not have a live listing data source. Enter similar properties manually, then compare the average, low, and high price per square foot.
Price-per-square-foot comparisons are most useful when properties are similar in location, condition, layout, age, lot size, and included space.
How to Use
- 1Choose a mode
Pick Area Calculator, Materials & Coverage, Volume, or Price per Square Foot.
- 2Enter measurements
Add lengths, widths, depth, project coverage, price, rent, or comparable values.
- 3Click Calculate
The result appears only after the required values are valid.
- 4Review outputs
Check square feet, conversions, material quantities, volume, or price per sq ft.
Tips and Notes
Measure sections separately
Rooms, floor plans, yards, and buildings are easier to total when each section has its own row.
Break up irregular shapes
Split unusual spaces into rectangles, triangles, circles, or trapezoids before adding totals.
Waste depends on the job
Flooring, carpet, tile, siding, and roofing waste factors change with pattern, cuts, and layout.
Home totals can differ
Manual square footage of a home may not match official listing, appraisal, or assessor standards.
Compare similar properties
Price per sq ft is more useful when properties are similar in layout, condition, and location.
Example Room Calculation
A room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has 120 sq ft of area. That same base area can feed a flooring square foot calculator, carpet square footage calculator, price per square foot calculator, or volume estimate if depth is added.
For a home price example, $202.38 / sq ft comes from dividing $425,000 by 2,100 square feet.
